As far back as the 1950’s, wealthy fishermen from around the world visited Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos, Mexico in quest of the bountiful number of billfish that inhabit the waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. Few destinations can rival Cabo San Lucas for the number and variety of fish caught on a year round basis. No longer a rustic fishing village, Cabo San Lucas now boasts many luxury resorts, world-class golf courses, gourmet dining and not only provides an excellent vacation opportunity but is a great starting point for both the experienced and novice angler.
Cabo San Lucas is known as the "Marlin Capital of the World" and anglers are encouraged to participate in the "catch and release" program which provides an opportunity for an incredible fishing experience while preserving these creatures for future generations. It is not unusual to catch a large bill fish on your very first fishing expedition in Los Cabos. Once reserved for the wealthy, fishing in Cabo is now within reach of almost all visitors and for many it is Cabo's major attraction. For non anglers, fishing expedition participants will enjoy the thrill of seeing sea lions, dolphins and often giant turtles in their natural environment.
Cabo offers a wide range of fishing fleets from which to select. From small pangas to luxury cruisers. This page will describe some of the boats available including those offered by the Gaviota Fleet, Cabo Magic, the Pisces Fleet, Redrum and many more.
Besides swimming and relaxing on the beach, sportfishing is Cabo's number one outdoor activity. An average of 50,000 billfish - sailfish, swordfish and marlin are hooked each year off of the cape, more than anywhere else in the world! The blue marlin (marlin azul) can reach 16' in length and weigh close to one ton.
Some of the best marlin-fishing spots include Banco San Jaime, 18 miles southwest of Cabo Falso and Banco Golden Gate, 19 miles west of Cabo Falso. Dorado and wahoo can also be found in the same areas. Marlin are also common just beyond the steep drop-offs between Los Frailes and Cabo Falso, an area easily reached by panga or skiff. Cabrilla, sierra, black seabass and grouper are readily found in the inshore waters. Surfcasters can take corvina, ladyfish, sierra and pargo. The best surfcasting in the immediate area is at Playa Solmar.
To land large gamefish, the best bet is to join a sportfishing cruiser - a powerboat equipped with electronic fish-finders, sophisticated tackle, fighting chairs and harnesses as well as wells for keeping live bait. Guided cruiser trips can be arranged through the front desk or concierge of any of the hotels we represent. Rates average $450 per day for a six-person 36' fishing cruiser, $335 on a 28' cruiser and $250 per day/$100 per half day on a 26 foot charter. Party cruisers are available at $175 per couple. Cruisers generally hold up to six anglers with rates including tax, license, gear and ice. The better outfits include fish preparation and packing at no extra charge. All Cabo outfits request and some even require that anglers release billfish. They suggest bringing a video camera along to record your catch... When a customer demands to keep his billfish, the Sportfishing Association of Los Cabos stipulates that only one billfish per boat may be killed. You can catch and release as many as you want or are able.
Panga fishing: Pangas, fiberglass fishing boats are available in Cabo San Lucas but most panga-fishing trips operate out of San Jose del CAbo. The average panga trip costs $125 in a 22' three-person boat. The $125 does not include rental gear and sometimes does not include licenses. As with the sportfishing cruisers, ask whether the quote includes the filleting of edible fish.
